Are they trying to electronically sign something when it comes up, I know Adobe can behave this same way if someone is trying to sign a document. Try saving a copy of the document to another format, like the older. DOC instead of. If there are any messed up formatting codes in the document, they should be stripped out when saving to a format that doesnt support them.
Is there a reference or link in the document image, linked file, UNC path reference, etc. If these particular documents came from outside your organization, such references may be trying to access something on the network where the documents originated. There is one reference that links to a program called "TAM" through an add-in, but it is always successful at pulling the string client name into the doc.
