I loved every second of this beautiful book, Axie Oh really has such a stunning way with words and the story just flew off the page and into my mind the second I started reading. This story is full of friendship, love, compassion and strong powerful characters who will melt your heart into a gooey mess.
And can we just talk about the cover for a second?! Thank you so so much to the publisher for sending me a copy to review. Helena Paris Omg sea gods. My favourite! If you're looking for a diverse story that reads like a fairytale, with sprinklings of the wonderful world building of Elizabeth Lim's work then I suggest you look no further.
The action starts pretty much as soon as the story does, which I did find a bit off putting at first. I would have preferred more of a build up and to get to know our main character Mina a bit more before everything kicked off! The story upholds this breakneck speed throughout and I will say it does make for a very quick read, I'd finished over half the story without even realising it, I became that immersed in Mina and her adventures in the spirit world.
I loved all the characters that were introduced, especially the main Mina who consistently showed herself to be a very determined and resilient girl. I really liked the focus on family and bonds and the themes were lovingly explored throughout. Overall I'd recommend this to anyone who likes books with a more fairytale-like quality. Oh has managed to write a story that has a lovely Ghibli quirkiness to it, with a very heartfelt message about fate and family at its core.
I'll definitely be reading more from this author in the future! Nov 09, cherelle aboltoutofthebook marked it as to-read Shelves: asian-lit-authors , arc-blog-tour , releases Apr 15, Amanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: ya-fantasy , writer-cult , releases.
Everything I hoped for! This is the lush, atmospheric, slow-burn romance, myth retelling of your dreams! I am sad for everyone waiting til but I did beg to read this many times for the last 5 years before I finally got to, so I can absolutely assure anyone that it is worth the wait. This story explores the depths of love, grief, forgiveness and hope while exploring a spirit world as vivid as our own. I can't wait to have a copy on my shelf!

A remarkably beautiful story, weaving in proverbs and poetry, and telling a tale A story of a strong will used with a passionate heart. Not looking out for yourself, but for others. Of seeing a course to help others and knowing that it will rob you of your own joy, but doing it anyways. And realizing that sometimes, when you do what's right, you are actually following your heart.
Sure to be a story the resonates strongly with readers, do not A remarkably beautiful story, weaving in proverbs and poetry, and telling a tale Sure to be a story the resonates strongly with readers, do not miss this fable-esque take on a Korean myth!
The vibe of the whole piece was stunning, the villages above the sea but even more, beneath the sea, was fascinating. Mina was a sweet, selfless and often foolish 16 year old. She loved fiercely and stepped in to save those she loved from their difficulties I was not enamoured by the Sea God at all and for a hot moment I thought I was going to lose my interest until that plot point developed and I gave my full investment.
The book was rounded with some amazing character aside from Mina. Shin had all my attention, I couldn't work him out, who he was, what he wanted but I believed in his connection to Mina. I adored Dai, Miki and Mask quite quickly, but I couldn't work out their purpose in the story but when I did, oh my word, the emotions were rolling through me.
If I were to describe this book, I'd say it was a beautiful read, a special standalone and one I'd recommend to all YA fantasy lovers. Thank you to Hodder Books for the beautiful review copy. May 04, Chloe rated it really liked it. I know, I know, that's bad, but it's absolutely stunning. And it sounded absolutely incredible as well. A girl who sacrifices herself save her brother, who is swept into the sea and into the Spirit Realm.
A story of a Sea God and deadly storms and enchantments. It sounded so, so good.
